2008 Oscar Nominees: The Reaction

BEST MAKEUP

Le Vie en Rose

Norbit

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

I think Le Vie en Rose has this in the doggie bag. It’s the only good movie of the bunch. And I can’t believe the trailer voice guy can now say, “Academy Award nominee, Norbit

Norbit: 1

Zodiac:
0

BEST FILM EDITING

The Bourne Ultimatum

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Into the Wild

No Country for Old Men

There Will Be Blood

Hey, where was the editing nom for The Bourne Supremacy guys? You misfits. And look who decided to join the party again. If it isn’t our good friend, Into the Wild. Take this nomination and choke on it.

BEST SCORE

Atonement

The Kite Runner

Michael Clayton

Ratatouille

3:10 to Yuma

This was a fairly weak year for great scores but this selection is completely wrong-headed. These are all fine scores. Well, I honestly don’t even remember Michael Clayton‘s score. But only two out three of these really belong: Ratatouille and Atonement.

I’m a little surprised Howard Shore’s excellent Eastern Promises score was passed over. However, the Academy failed to nominate THE TWO BEST SCORES OF THE YEAR.

They have a knack for doing this. They didn’t even nominate Clint Mansell’s Fountain score (easily the best and most original score in years) last year. And they now ignored Nick Cave and Warren Ellis’s beautiful and haunting score for Jesse James. It’s a fucking joke, really.

They also screwed up by not nominating Jonny Greenwood’s fantabulously dark and eerie There Will Be Blood score. I know, I know it wasn’t eligible because of the track over the end credits. Even when the Academy is thinking they screw it up.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

“Falling Slowly” from Once

“Happy Working Song” from Enchanted

“Raise it Up” from August Rush

“So Close” from Enchanted

“That’s How You Know” from Enchanted

If I had it my way, all the nominees would have come from Once and the shockingly ignored Into the Wild songs by Eddie Vedder. I’m really taken aback Veddar got zilch.

UPDATE: In my haste, I completely forgot about another would-be contender absent from the award scene … Dave Matthews’ great, creepy song “The Fly” from the the under-seen creepy flick, Joshua. I didn’t expect it to get nominated, but it’s easily better than all of the nominated songs above, save maybe “Falling Slowly”.

That about sums up my dirty and spiteful feelings this year. There is sure to be a ton of more Oscar coverage in the coming weeks so stay tuned.
