What’s this ‘Cloverfield’ Thing?

So I saw Transformers tonight, and while I can’t say anything about that film I can talk a bit about the mysterious trailer that showed in front of the film, and I can only assume will show in front of every showing of Transformers come July 3rd.

The film being previewed is Cloverfield and J.J. Abrams is producing it. Ain’t It Cool News posted a description of the trailer that said the following:

It is from the perspective of people’s camera in NYC. A huge earthquake breaks up a going away party. The people at the party go to the roof top just in time to catch lower Manhatten erupt into a ball of fire! They make their way to the street to witness the head of the statue of liberty fly down the street, end clip with screaming! Insane!

There are a few things left out though that I think are important. First interesting thing about this trailer is that while it starts out with the traditional green screen saying everyone can watch it and blah, blah, blah I actually thought it was the beginning of Transformers for a second. It had the same feel of all the Transformer trailers as the head of the Statue of Liberty comes crumbling down. Then, the one thing the AICN scooper does not mention is that at the end it says “Coming 01.18.08.”

AICN reports that Drew Goddard is penning the script, but other than that there isn’t a lot out there on it. Another post at AICN says that “word from inside the company is that Cloverfield is a giant monster movie, featuring something that’s being referred to internally as ‘The Parasite.'” There is more on the flick and it sounds accurate from what I saw since the trailer is pretty much all shot on handheld camcorders. Get more right here.

Hopefully the trailer will be online soon and more details will surface as the look I got was pretty damned cool. I think a lot of people will think the name of the movie is Bad Robot as J.J.’s production house’s name is all over the trailer, while the actual name of the film is not to be found anywhere.
