TOP TEN: Worst Movies That Made Over $100 Million

I can only assume just about everyone has seen Basic Instinct, and I would also be willing to bet that if anyone has seen it more than once it is not because of how good they thought it was. My guess is that repeat viewings came from 10-year-old males spanking it out to one of the many sex scenes or the infamous Sharon Stone leg cross. Lesson here is that not only does sex alone not make a good movie (in this case softcore porn), but Paul Verhoeven is not a good director. It’s too bad Showgirls only made $20 million or we could have had a Verhoeven double-dip on this list.

If you aren’t at work and want to enjoy a bit of the badness that is Basic Instinct enjoy the sex-filled video below.

Basic Instinct is the #259 grossing film of all-time domestically and made $117,727,224.

I know this one is going to probably create a bit of a stir since the online movie community is very excitable and loves comic book movies and Spider-Man is a fan favorite, but unfortunately it is not a favorite of mine. Prior to the release of Spider-Man 3 I wrote an article titled “Why I’m Not Excited about ‘Spider-Man 3’” and it got a large amount of reads and a bit of criticism, but I hold to it, and my main reason for disliking Spider-Man is not only Aunt May as that article discusses, but simply because it is boring filmmaking and its re-watchability factor is extremely low since it is two hours and hard to stay awake through.

Outside of the time I had to review the Spider-Man 1 & 2 DVDs and writing the above article I mentioned, I have not been able to actually watch Spider-Man, or 2 for that matter, again. The films are very granola, the acting is weak and the dialogue is debilitating. I am not sure why the cheese in the Spidey films gets a pass from fans while Fantastic Four was pretty much savaged. At least Fantastic Four had a fun performance from Chris Evans going for it.

Spider-Man is the #7 grossing film of all-time domestically and made $403,706,375.

“The Firm” was the book that made John Grisham a household name, but when the film adaptation came around and Tom Cruise signed up to star as Mitch McDeere it seemed like a recipe for success. However, while The Firm did manage to make $158 million at the box and sits in the #136 position all-time it is simply not a good movie, and the book was crap to boot.

Grisham’s stories managed to save themselves movie-wise with future releases such as A Time to Kill, but The Firm‘s cheesy storyline and cliche plot developments made this film a mind-numbing tour of the obvious. Luckily, in 1993 Cruise wasn’t considered a whack job… How else could this movie possibly make $24 million more than Mission: Impossible III without even taking inflation into consideration? That is just insulting.

I am not an Adam Sandler hater by any means, but Click is the first of two Sandler films that made this list and it is certainly not a film worthy of over $130 million. As Click continued to make dollars and then it ultimately was awarded an Oscar nomination for effects of all things it was really quite the shocker.

Based on trailers Click looked funny, but as the story moves on you pretty much realize you have seen all of this before. Sandler plays the out-of-touch dad that ultimately finds himself lost in a world of moral dillemmas which all ends up in the dreaded dream sequence ending and him learning valuable life lessons. Yeah, didn’t see any of that coming after the first ten minutes.

Want a lesson? Think up a comedy that doesn’t rehash age old plotlines and is above fart jokes and fat suits.

Click made $137,355,633 and is #184 all-time.

I went to a rather small private college and it was there that I learned that pretty much only girls like Grease and then there were the guys that pretended to like Grease because they thought it would help them with the ladies. A lesson for those guys out there trying to pull this stunt: If a girl is judging you based on the fact that you like Grease you really need to work on the rest of the package because it must not be too appealing. The worst part about that silly stunt is that if she falls for it you have to watch this mess over and over again. Ouch, that hurts to even think about.

I am sure my dislike for this film is largely due to the fact that I am a male, but you can’t hold that against me. Trust me there are plenty of “chick flicks” that I watch on a regular basis, but none of them involve a lot of leather and there is not a lot of frolicking in any of them. If that is your idea of a good movie then go with it, just keep it away from my TV.

Grease made $188,389,888 and is #85 all-time.
