This is getting too easy. Just pick the new blockbuster and call it good. I don’t even feel overly proud, although if I get to ten in a row I’ll probably throw a party. You’re invited.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Six Weeks In A Row
This was a poor result. Why? It was below the first two. The point of a franchise is to build the box office, not squander it. Based on the results of the first four big sequels it’s looking like people just have a finite amount to spend on movies.
Result: $37.0 million (My rank: #1, $8.4m off)
So it didn’t crash as horribly this weekend. That’s either a function of people waiting until the crowds died down or of a smaller overall number mathematically prohibiting a 60 percent bleed again. Just trust me on that last theory, it’s too much to get into here.
Result: $21.3 million (My rank: #4, $2.5m off)
3. Knocked Up
Hey man, I was pretty close overall this weekend. Back to the matter at hand, only a 35 percent change?? That’s word of mouth city. That’s friends telling friends. If you want to look at the main reason Ocean’s suffered look no further than the Apatow mafia.
Result: $20.0 million (My rank: #3, $1.1m off)
4. Surf’s Up
Huh. Okay, this was a disaster. What the hell happened to parents and little kids? Did they all leave the country? It looks like the luster is completely off of toons, Ratatouille is screwed.
Result: $18.0 million (My rank: #2, $10.2m off)
Or was it this that hurt Surf’s Up? I hope not. I’d watch Surf’s Up again way before Shrek the Third.
Result: $15.7 million (My rank: #6, $1.3m off)
This was absolutely butchered. Was it the lack of screenings? The pirating? I’m going to go old school on this one, I think people just didn’t want to see it.
Result: $8.7 million (My rank: #5, $6.3m off)
7. Mr. Brooks
This is an interesting result, exactly half. To me, this is a loss, because it means not enough people went out and evangelized. For religion people will do it. For Mr. Brooks? Not so much.
Result: $5.0 million (My rank: #7, $2.1m off)
8. Spider-Man 3
Only a 42 percent slide from last weekend! Way to go guys! Here, in your sixth weekend, you’re finally putting up some good numbers. From one to two to three, this series has dropped off at the box office. That’s what you call “poor management.”
Result: $4.4 million (My rank: #8, $.9m off)
9. Waitress
$12m and counting. Plus, they haven’t even released it internationally yet. That should be worth at least a few million more. Score!
Result: $1.6 million (My rank: #9, $.2m off)
10. Disturbia
For the record, I missed Gracie making the top ten by $27,000. That’s 3500 people. That’s one out of every 100,000 people making the choice for Disturbia. That’s insane.
Result: $0.550 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
