Box-Office Wrap-Up: May 11 – May 13

This was the roughest Oracle week in a long time as Spider-Man 3 was murdered and no one wanted to see the new movies. It’s already a very streaky summer, hopefully the arrival of some decent films can add some consistency going forward. Either that or I lose my mind.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Two Weeks In A Row
Maybe this is the way superhero movies work at the box office. Big week one, the massive drop-off. Superman Returns did the exact same thing. I still want to believe that this one was hurt (60.3 percent hurt!) because it wasn’t good enough. The fits better with my world view.
Result: $60.0 million (My rank: #1, $25.1m off)
The first one made $7985 per theater. This one made $4342. They both made $10m their opening weekends. Here’s what this means: the exact same people had more theaters to choose from. But there weren’t new people. Fascinating.
Result: $10.0 million (My rank: #2, $8.4m off)
So good! The comedy molestation genre will have to wait for another shot at the box office because this one was MURDERED.
Result: $5.8 million (My rank: #3, $4.3m off)
Okay, but at this level there isn’t much money. $4.5m separates the third from the tenth slot. I’m good at this, but I don’t make it my life’s sole purpose.
Result: $4.8 million (My rank: #6, $1.8m off)
$1800 per theater. Let’s do this math together. Three days of business, $600 per day. Eight bucks a ticket means 75 total tickets sold. Six shows per day. That means if you saw this you were likely to see 11.5 people in the big ol’ theater with you. That’s scary bad, especially the half of a person part.
Result: $3.5 million (My rank: #4, $3.2m off)
Take that above number and make it less than ten. I know no one reading this saw Fracture this weekend. It would be too large a coincidence.
Result: $2.9 million (My rank: #8, $1.2m off)
I was dialed in on The Invisible. I thought no one wanted to see it and I was right. Total gross: $15.5m. Total pride lost: Infinite.
Result: $1.6 million (My rank: #7, $.6m off)
Four weeks in the top ten is a pretty impressive run. And now it’s beating Blades of Glory too. You know that’s what they were shooting for when they started this project.
Result: $1.7 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
9. Next
Hey, this is a nice prediction here at the bottom. If you stuck around you’ve been rewarded.
Result: $1.6 million (My rank: #9, $.1m off)
Welcome to the Laremy lounge. Here’s my question; if Lifetime is television for women then I’m allowed to watch? Should I be ashamed? Also, why is the programming so crappy?
Result: $1.3 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
