Box-Office Oracle: May. 11 – May. 13

#1 movie predicted correctly: One week in a row
It won’t hit a 50 percent drop-off because there is still nothing out. A gossip queen and a zombie flick as competition? C’mon, these are not things the general public pays any attention to.
Estimate: $85.1 million
I was a little shocked to learn the first one cleared $10m its first weekend with a hefty 8k per theater. It’s getting more theaters now, and it has a following… so why not second place?
Estimate: $18.4 million
The $4200 I’m giving it per theater isn’t very much. You know one hard thing to predict? How many screens per theater. For instance, Spidey is at over 4k theaters, representing 10k screens. Some are showing it on two screens obviously. Well, that won’t be the case for Georgia Rule will it? See, this predicting game isn’t all champagne and bikini babes.
Estimate: $10.1 million
I can’t even imagine the life of someone who is psyched to see this. If one of my friends asked me if I wanted to go I would hang up on him. And then take out a contract on his life.
Estimate: $6.7 million
What is wrong with this, why so little theaters, why so little buzz? The cast, Braff, J-Bateman, and Amanda Peet all strike me as capable actors. So why the delays and the re-naming (from Fast Track)? I have way too many questions here because I am extremely wary of how poorly this will do.
Estimate: $4.4 million
Really, anything that makes less than $3m I shouldn’t have to talk about. Next time I’m having my agent negotiate that.
Estimate: $3.0 million
I think the people who have never played cards were impressed with the card action. I read a few reviews that said it was a great part of the film. Bah. It was just another example of missed opportunities.
Estimate: $1.8 million
What can I say about this? Hmmm. Well, Sir Tony Hopkins is headed to my fine city of Seattle to accept an honorary award. How’s that for useless trivia?
Estimate: $1.7 million
9. Next
Ladies and gents, please purchase something from the Next bake sale! We’d hate to lay off all of our admin assistants.
Estimate: $1.7 million
Welcome to the Laremy lounge. I was not pleased with the Kentucky Derby last weekend, I lost $40. But like they say you can’t win if you don’t play! Oddly, you could substitute “lose” for “win” in that statement and it would ring just as true. Lesson: most ad slogans are dumb.
Estimate: $1.6 million
