Box-Office Wrap-Up: Apr. 27 – Apr. 29

Wowsers. No one went to the movies this weekend. Nic Cage was brutalized, and Disturbia captured the third weekend in a row without hitting double digits. Even though none of you watched a movie this weekend let’s break it down.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Zero Weeks In A Row
I was under a 20 percent variance, us predictors shoot for under 30 percent. This is one of the more unscientific processes on the planet, so you still got your money’s worth.
Result: $9.1 million (My rank: #2, $1.4m off)
Now this is shocking. Only a million people caught it but I’ve never even met someone who’s heard of it. Have you? Did you see an ad? My head is getting a great scratching today.
Result: $7.6 million (My rank: #8, $3.2m off)
3. Next
Holy crap. What do you make of this? Both this and The Wicker Man were far better movies than Ghost Rider and yet that one took home $115m. Lesson: Make crappy movies Nic. You’ve got a new goal.
Result: $7.2 million (My rank: #3, $4.0m off)
In this nasty week it would have been nice to get a bingo (correct spot, exact dollar amount) but I was 100k off. Maybe when the final numbers come out, eh?
Result: $7.0 million (My rank: #4, $.1m off)
I can’t help it, I’m interested in this Semi-Pro idea. The ABA was a fun league, ripe for comedy, and Will might win my heart and soul again.
Result: $5.2 million (My rank: #7, $.7m off)
Another low variance but nasty placement. Some would say those two factors were related.
Result: $4.8 million (My rank: #10, $1.2m off)
Hmmm, I overrated this one. Looks like the fanatics were out week one and it didn’t bring in enough new people this weekend. Is the $20m this one will make enough for the Pegg / Wright / Frost team to stay buzzy?
Result: $4.7 million (My rank: #7, $1.2m off)
I do wonder what their internet ad buy was. There were weeks there where you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing a Vacancy ad. The effect? Impossible to tell. That’s the joy of an ad budget.
Result: $4.2 million (My rank: #9, $.1m off)
No one wanted to see Stone Cold? Wrestling has fallen off the map back from when I used to watch it on NBC in the 80’s.
Result: $4.0 million (My rank: #3, $3.6m off)
Welcome to the Laremy lounge. It’s pleasing that Kickin it Old Skool was murdered at the box office. If there’s such thing as a justifiable homicide that was it.
Result: $3.4 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
