A Look Forward at 2007

Let’s face it, we’ve talked about 2006 quite a bit. But what about 2007? Certainly some movies will be released this year too right? Here’s a look at a few of “near top ten” and then we’ll delve into the actual top ten.

Untitled Farrelly Brothers Project: There isn’t a “can’t miss” comedy on the board right now. Can the Farrelly Bros and Ben Stiller recapture the funny that’s been missing for eight years? Before you say “no” let me at least write a review.

Reign Over Me:This has Adam Sandler doing dramatic work after losing his wife in 9/11. I loved Punch Drunk Love and I’ve hated the last five years of Sandler comedies so I’m trying to get the buzz building for his serious work. Bzzzzz.

Fast Track: Zach Braff, Amanda Peet, and Jason Bateman in a romantic comedy. The only warning sign is that the screenwriters and directors appear to have right around zero credits, an odd choice for one of the most hyped guys (Braff) in the business right now.

Stomp the Yard: I’m hoping it’s even better than Drumline. I know that’s saying something, but I’ve got to dream big, don’t I?

Evan Almighty: There isn’t any reason Carell won’t be better than Jim Carrey was in the original. In fact, you’d have to bet he’ll be better given the respective track records over the past few years.

Michael Clayton: It’s starring George Clooney and it’s written by the guy behind the Jason Bourne screenplays. The story involves a defense attorney hitting a rough patch with some former clients. Ideally this movie will feature MURDER.

Now that those have been mentioned (with honor) here are my real deal top ten most wanna see films for 2007.

#10 Fred Claus
The trailer is decent and I’m only moderately concerned that the premise of Santa Claus having a brother isn’t crazy hilarious. I know Vince will provide the funny though, he always does. It even looked like they were doing some improv, with a pro like Giamatti that could prove smart. [GET MORE HERE]
#9 Transformers
I’m worried they’ll destroy my childhood here. And by “they” I do in fact mean “Michael Bay.” Transformers isn’t War of the Worlds or Aliens but you wouldn’t know that from the trailer. Of course I’ll be seeing it, if only to bitch about Bay one more time. [GET MORE HERE]
#8 Live Free or Die Hard
Hey, it worked for Rocky, why can’t a new Die Hard work? Also, it has Justin Long, the kid from the Mac/PC ads. Ha, PC, you idiot! [GET MORE HERE]
#7 The Astronaut Farmer
Here we have Billy Bob Thorton as a retired astronaut farmer. Let that roll around your head for a second. So yeah, the premise alone is interesting enough to get my money; it could be classic or an epic disaster. [GET MORE HERE]
#6 Charlie Wilson’s War
Tom Hanks and Phil Seymour Hoffman in a cold war political piece. Sounds like Oscar Depot. The plot evidently deals with Afghanistan in the 80’s, back when we were pro-Taliban. Oops, gotta go, N.S.A. needs to talk to me. [GET MORE HERE]
#5 The Golden Age
A period piece with Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I from the writer behind Gladiator. Doesn’t get much more must see than that. Do I worry that we’ve had our fill of English history movies? A bit, but I seem to like one every year. [GET MORE HERE]
#4 Ocean’s 13
I was one of the few who appreciated the sequel more than the original so I’m betting I’ll be all over the third edition. Plus, adding Al Pacino is not going to hurt. Also, the longer they keep this going the better my chances get at starring in Ocean’s 42. [GET MORE HERE]
#3 The Bourne Ultimatum
Do I want to see the best action franchise out there? Hell yeah, right now, pass the popcorn. I just hope Julia Stiles is featured in a prominent role. She’s good stuff. [GET MORE HERE]
#2 300
The best trailer of 2006, 300 looks like it combines the strong elements of Sin City and Gladiator. If the slo-mo, film treated, guitar riffing previews are any indication this will be every guy’s must see film of 2007. [GET MORE HERE]
#1 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
How will they end it? Will they end it? Should Disney offer Depp a zillion dollars to make a fourth? Will more people like this one? Can we have a Keira nude scene? See, so many questions, and that’s why this is my most anticipated film of 2007. [GET MORE HERE]
