Box Office Wrap-Up: July 21 – July 23

In the end it wasn’t even close. The Village clearly scared people but from my perspective I think the theme of the film also turned people off. Of course I didn’t see it either so in some small way ($8 dollars) I sent a message too.

#1 movie predicted correctly: Five Weeks In A Row

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest $35.0m (My rank:#1, $4.1m Off)

Okay, I’ll admit it, I’m a fan of the Paris Hilton song. Do what you will with that information. Also, please note the five week winning streak that Pirates just delivered. Now I’ve got street cred.

2. Monster House $23.0m (My rank:#3, $2.2m Off)

I can’t imagine the fate of the little ones who saw this… I can only hope they blacked out partially through.

3. Lady in the Water $18.2m (My rank:#2, $9.9m Off)

What a way to end the Disney contract. Can you see his next negotiation? “Hey, I’m that guy who just laid an egg. Remember me? Cluck, cluck.”

4. You, Me and Dupree $12.7m (My rank:#6, $1.7m Off)

This Wilson whupped up on the other Wilson. Wilson on Wilson violence. Or you could say Kate Hudson killed Uma if you like cat fights better.

5. Little Man $11.0m (My rank:#7, $1.3m Off)

It actually did okay which refutes pretty much every one of my theories about economics, race, and word of mouth. Back to the drawing board on sweeping yet ignorant theories for me.

6. Clerks II $9.6m (My rank:#5, $2.2m Off)

It made its money back! Other than that it will never be heard from again. Another rousing victory for Hollywood.

7. My Super Ex-Girlfriend $8.7m (My rank:#4, $7.0m Off)

Destroyed. Crushed. No one wants to see an ex-girlfriend with super powers. Guys don’t want to see it. Girls don’t want to see it because they don’t want to compete against a girl with super powers. Who did that leave as an audience? Vagrants, I guess. Eight million bucks worth of shifty-eyed vagrants.

8. Superman Returns $7.4m (My rank:#8, $1.7m Off)

He returned all right, right into the BASEMENT BABY! I’m starting the official “Let’s get another director for the sequel” club, not because I don’t like Singer but because I don’t think he was right for the project. I hereby nominate Kevin Smith. Yes, I’m serious.

9. The Devil Wears Prada $7.4m (My rank:#9, $2.1m Off)

Prada, let me hold you to my bosom. You did very well my little trailblazing romantic comedy. Very well.

10. Cars $4.9m (My rank:#10, $1.3m Off)

Hey, lookee there, I got all ten in the top ten. Sure, not in order or anything but still, that’s pretty good. Next week I’m going for in order. Come see me Friday petunia and we’ll do this thing together.

The new movie book is coming, and it will be better than ever. Stay tuned. -Laremy
