THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR
A strong film, with some great performances, The Door in the Floor could be a surprise winner at this year’s Oscars.
Based on the first third of the novel “A Widow for One Year”, The Door in the Foor is being called the best adaptation of a John Irving novel to date.
The credit for the adaptation should go to Tod Williams. Williams could earn nominations for his job of directing the film, but probably has the best shot at winning an Oscar for the work he did adapting the screenplay.
Other Oscar possibilities could include Jeff Bridges for Best Actor. Bridges gives one of the best performances I have seen from him as he plays a recently separated womanizing artist, who is struggling with the death of their child. Based on his body of work, and his strong performance, I would be surprised if Bridges does not get a nomination.
Kim Bassinger plays Bridge’s estranged wife, a previous Oscar winner for LA Confidential, Bassinger’s performance is strong yet subdued. She does a great job, but she does it quietly, and, while her performance is good, I would be surprised if the Academy throws a nomination her way.
This Focus Features release is not being talked about much, but it should get some Oscar consideration.
