The departure of director Joe Carnahan has left the chair open but Frank Darabont, screenwriter for the third film in the Mission: Impossible franchise, spoke to Empire Online.
“This is going into a very character-driven and gritty  much grittier than the first two  kind of place. Dealing in a more immediately graspable and relevant reality, globally speaking. It’s much more in line with certain things that are going on in the headlines and if I said any more than that I think Tom [Cruise] might have me killed… I think it’s going to be really terrific whoever directs it.”
