UPDATE: McG Off SUPERMAN, but is Bryan Singer On?

Hopefully word from The Hollywood Reporter will put to end the rumors surrounding McG and the highly volatile pre-production of Superman.

For a long time McG has been attached to the project, but Warner Bros. has been careful to never confirm that McG was the director. Then recently there was that recent excitement around Michael Bay directing the flick, which quickly was sent to the trash heap.

Now, I can happily report that McG will “NOT” be directing Superman as The Hollywood Reporter has so generously confirmed for us by saying that a Warners spokesperson confirmed that the studio and the director have amicably parted ways. The primary reason given was the inability of the two parties to agree over a budget. Casting also was an issue. Part of the conflict between the director and the studio was the shooting location. McG favored a New York shoot, while the studio favored Australia.

While this could quickly come back around and bite us all in the ass as McG is announced as the director of the project and the film will be fast tracked into production in New York, but I wouldn’t count on it.

UPDATED: It now appears that a director may be attached as IGN FilmForce got word from one of their WB contacts that Warner Brothers president and chief operating officer Alan Horn met a certain director the other day for dinner and offered him the chance to helm the next Superman movie. That director was none other than Bryan Singer, the filmmaker behind the X-Men movies.

The IGN scooper claims that Singer has not said yes … but is considering it.
