The killer doll is back! Seed of Chucky, the fifth in the popular series of Chucky (Child’s Play) horror comedies, begins production today in Romania. Making his directorial debut is the franchise creator and writer of all five films, Don Mancini. Returning to produce are doll creator and series producer David Kirschner (Secondhand Lions, Frailty) and producing partner Corey Sienega (executive producer of Bride of Chucky). Focus Features co-presidents David Linde and James Schamus made the announcement today.
Seed of Chucky introduces Glen (voiced by The Lord of the Rings star Billy Boyd), the orphan doll offspring of the irrepressible devilish-doll-come-to-life Chucky (again voiced by series star Brad Dourif) and his equally twisted bride Tiffany (again voiced by Jennifer Tilly). When production starts on a movie detailing the urban legend of his parents’ lethal exploits, Glen heads for Hollywood where he brings his bloodthirsty parents back from the dead. The family dynamics are far from perfect as Chucky and Tiffany go Hollywood and get rolling on a new spree of murderous mayhem – much to gentle Glen’s horror. Chucky can’t believe that his child doesn’t want to walk in his murdering footsteps, and star-struck Tiffany can’t believe that the movie will star her favorite actress, Jennifer Tilly (playing herself), who soon becomes an unwitting hostess to this new family in more ways than one…
Hip-hop superstar Redman (How High) will co-star (also playing himself) as a rapper-turned-director casting a movie in which Ms. Tilly is desperate to star. Notorious filmmaker John Waters will appear as a sleazy tabloid paparazzo. Guy Louthan is executive-producing Seed of Chucky. Focus executive vice president, production Joe Pichirallo is overseeing the film, which is set for nationwide domestic release this Halloween.
Mr. Linde and Mr. Schamus said, “We get a kick out of Chucky, and we’re not scared to admit it. Don Mancini has come up with a very fresh take for the franchise, and this Halloween, new viewers and longtime Chucky fans alike are in for bloody good fun.”
“After our successful collaboration on Bride of Chucky with David Linde and James Schamus, we are proud to be teaming up with the talented folks at Focus Features. With this new addition to the family in Seed of Chucky, Don has turned the deadly duo into a triple threat guaranteed to redefine family values this Halloween,” stated Mr. Kirschner and Ms. Sienega.
The previous Chucky features were Child’s Play (released domestically in November 1988), Child’s Play 2 (which debuted in November 1990), Child’s Play 3 (which opened in August 1991), and Bride of Chucky (released in October 1998). The latter three entries were produced and distributed by Focus parent company Universal Pictures, with Good Machine International (since absorbed into Focus) handling overseas sales for the last feature. Focus International will handle overseas sales for Seed of Chucky. Following tradition for the series’ top titles, Seed of Chucky has been scheduled for a wide release in the U.S. on October 29th.
