Singleton told XXL Magazine that his involvement in the film about the slain rap legend was “on hold right now because we’re trying to figure out some things… I got a script and I got the blessings from his family. We’ll see…. We’ve got to get it right.”
Singleton was an obvious choice to helm the biopic given his first-hand working relationship with Shakur, whom he directed in 1993’s Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson. He also wrote the film Baby Boy specifically for Shakur, although Tyrese Gibson replaced him after his murder in 1996.
An actor-turned-acclaimed director, Franklin has been out of the feature game for a spell since the 2003 Denzel Washington-starrer Out of Time, with only 2013’s low-budget Bless Me, Ultima to his credit. He has recently amassed an impressive run helming episodes of acclaimed TV shows such as “Homeland,” “The Affair” and “House of Cards,” being Emmy-nominated for the latter.
Tupac will be produced by James G. Robinson, David Robinson & LT Hutton along with Randall Emmett and George Furla. The film will be executive produced by Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur with production targeted for later this year.
