Minions & Monsters has a segment that might make fans scratch their heads. The movie is the seventh entry in the Despicable Me franchise and marks the first time that this has happened.
It’s something the maker has confirmed won’t be brief. It’s positioned as Universal and Illumination’s summer tentpole release.
Why does Minions & Monsters have a section that fans won’t understand?
Minions & Monsters will have a section where no English will be spoken, and will be entirely in Minionese. Making the revelation during a conversation with Empire Magazine, creator and director Pierre Coffin, who also voices the Minions, said, “The whole point of it is that you don’t understand them when they speak — but you understand them nonetheless.”
The only Minionese segment is reportedly 15 minutes long, and Coffin also disclosed that the milieu of Minions & Monsters is central to the Minions themselves. The film is set in 1920s Hollywood, the era when silent films were giving way to talkies. It will also see Pierre Coffin return to directing for the first time since the 2017 film Despicable Me 3.
“All the Minions stuff is heavily inspired by silent-movie stars,” Coffin said. “There’s this magic element to it.”
“I want to hope that the reason why the Minions are successful is that in this era of highly political correctness, they’re on the edge of being insolent,” he added.
Minions & Monsters has a stellar voice cast, including Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Trey Parker, and Allison Janney.
The synopsis of Minions & Monsters reads, “This is the rambunctious, ridiculous, and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world, and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.”
Minions & Monsters is slated to hit the screens on July 1, 2026.
