Emmy winner Zendaya is officially teaming up with director Barry Jenkins for A24’s upcoming biographical drama movie about the life of legendary musician Ronnie Spector. Zendaya is set to portray Spector, dubbed “the bad girl of rock and roll.”
The project will reportedly be based on Spector’s 1990 memoir Be Me Baby, which she co-wrote with Vince Waldron. Before her passing in 2022, Spector was actually the one who hand-picked Zendaya to play in her biopic. The late singer was also originally going to executive produce the project.
Who else is involved in Zendaya’s Ronnie Spector movie?
The upcoming Ronnie Spector movie will be directed by Jenkins from a screenplay written by Dave Kajganich. The latter is reportedly working hard on creating an “expressive interpretation” of the singer’s life since both Jenkins and Zendaya want to deliver a unique biopic that could immerse the audiences. The project is being produced by Zendaya, Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, Tom Shelly, Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, with Jonathan Greenfield serving as an executive producer.
This marks Zendaya’s latest collaboration with A24 after previously working on the acclaimed HBO series Euphoria, which is currently in production for Season 3. They are also working together on the upcoming romance dramedy movie The Drama, which will also be led by Robert Pattinson. At the moment, Zendaya is attached to star in several high-profile projects, including Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 4 and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Both movies will reunite her with fellow Marvel actor and fiancé Tom Holland.
