The release date of Paul Thomas Anderson’s adventure crime thriller One Battle After Another, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, has been pushed back. The movie was supposed to come out on August 8, 2025. But now, because of the delay, it will release over a month later.
One Battle After Another starring Leonardo DiCaprio pushed to September 2025
Warner Bros. has announced that Anderson’s One Battle After Another, led by DiCaprio, will now be released on September 16, 2025. Previously, the studio had plans to release director Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s monster musical The Bride, featuring Jessie Buckley as Frankenstein’s bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster, around that date. That movie will now come out on March 6, 2026, instead.
The delay could potentially be beneficial for One Battle After Another as it will now have a global IMAX release. Moreover, the delay will give the studio time to equip theaters with Vista Vision projection systems.
The Hollywood Reporter cited sources to claim that one drawback of the delay could be that the movie would most likely not have its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, slated to take place between May 13, 2025, and May 24, 2025. However, the September 16 theatrical premiere date gives the filmmakers the option to debut it in Venice or Toronto.
Besides DiCaprio, the cast includes Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, Wood Harris, and Benicio del Toro. Anderson penned the screenplay with Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland serving as the inspiration. The official logline reads, “When their evil nemesis resurfaces after 16 years, a band of ex-revolutionaries reunite to rescue the daughter of one of their own.”
Notably, Anderson’s 2014 feature, Inherent Vice, was also based on a book by Pynchon.
Different outlets have reported different figures for the production budget for One Battle After Another. However, all those figures are considerably over $100 million, which makes this movie Anderson’s most expensive filmmaking venture to date.
