Narnia: Netflix Boss Talks Greta Gerwig Movie & IMAX Release, Calls Script ‘Fantastic’

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has given an update on Greta Gerwig’s Narnia.

Gerwig is currently working on a film adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. The film will be released in 2026 and is expected to launch a franchise for the streaming platform.

What did Netflix’s Ted Sarandos’ say about Greta Gerwig’s Narnia?

Speaking with Variety, Sarandos said of Gerwig’s first Narnia movie, “We gave Greta a world-building job [on Narnia] before she had built a world with Barbie. Her script was fantastic, and we have a great relationship.”

When asked if the IMAX release was something that Gerwig demanded, Sarandos said, “It wasn’t some giant deal we had to salvage. We wanted to support it and figure out something new. The one thing we haven’t really tried is a big IMAX release. IMAX is hugely differentiated from at-home watching. When I go to the theater, it’s getting closer and closer to at home. But Imax is super differentiated. The two-week run for Narnia will check all the boxes for awards qualifications and create a bit of an event. We’re happy to do it.

Plot details for Gerwig’s first Narnia remain under wraps at this time. No casting has been officially announced; however, Casino Royale’s Daniel Craig has received an offer to join the cast that he has not publicly accepted or passed on yet. It is unclear who he could play in the movie. Charli XCX is also in talks for the role of the White Witch.

In addition to Barbie, Gerwig co-directed 2008’s Nights and Weekends with Joe Swanberg before she then went on to helm 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women. She has also worked on the scripts for movies like 2012’s Frances Ha, 2015’s Mistress America, and more.

Gerwig’s Narnia will get a two-week IMAX global run in November 2026. The movie will then come to Netflix on Christmas 2026.
