Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos says there’s a “gigantic universe” to be explored with Stranger Things.
Stranger Things Season 5, which will be the final chapter of the popular Netflix series, completed filming in late 2024. It is now in post-production and expected to be released sometime later this year.
Speaking with Variety, Sarandos said that “there won’t be a dry eye” when asked to describe the final season of Stranger Things.

When asked if the franchise could continue in some way after Stranger Things Season 5, Sarandos said, “So Stranger Things, I believe, is a gigantic universe — you see it in novelizations of the characters now. You see it in consumer products. You see it in the live stage show, the prequel Stranger Things: The First Shadow. That’s just playing hugely successfully on the West End, and it’s going to be opening on Broadway.”
At this time, no Stranger Things spin-off, sequel, or prequel series have been officially announced by Netflix.
Stranger Things Season 5 is produced by the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The cast includes Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Jim Hopper, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley, Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman, Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair, Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna, and Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler. Additionally, The Terminator’s Linda Hamilton has been cast in an undisclosed role.
An exact premiere date for Stranger Things Season 5 has not yet been announced by Netflix.
