The Alto Knights reviews have begun to make their way online, with Robert De Niro‘s latest crime drama earning mostly mixed reactions early on.
What are The Alto Knights reviews saying?
At Rotten Tomatoes, The Alto Knights is currently sitting at a 38%, with 32 reviews currently in for the movie. Most reactions to the movie cite the lack of anything new or novel in the movie.
The Daily Beast’s Nick Schager noted that it was “an ignominious tour-de-force for the esteemed headliner, who gets to indulge in just about every caricatured mannerism and colloquialism in the stale La Cosa Nostra cookbook.”
The Hollywood Reporter’s Frank Scheck says that De Niro is “more than capable” of handling the “daunting assignment” of playing two roles, but that the premise ultimately feels more “so gimmicky that it saps the movie of its intended seriousness.”
Not all reviews were negative, however, as Variety’s Peter Debruge praised De Niro’s “greatness,” noting that “if there was any doubt as to De Niro’s greatness, it’s laid to rest in these face-to-face confrontations. No star could’ve held his own quite so effectively against De Niro.”
“The film follows two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello (De Niro) and Vito Genovese (De Niro), as they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever,” the synopsis reads.
De Niro plays both Vito Genovese and Frank Costello in the film. The cast also includes Debra Messing, Kathrine Narducci, Cosmo Jarvis, Michael Rispoli, Michael Adler, Ed Amatrudo, Joe Bacino, Anthony J. Gallo, Wallace Langham, Louis Mustillo, Frank Piccirillo, Matt Servitto, and Robert Uricola (“Raging Bull”).
The script for the movie was written by Nicholas Pileggi, while Irwin Winkler, Jason Sosnoff, Levinson, Charles Winkler, and David Winkler serve as producers and Mike Drake as an executive producer.
The Alto Knights will be released in United States theaters on March 21, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
