Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has become a huge success on Netflix after it bombed at the box office. The Sony production, which was a part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), arrived in theaters on December 12, 2024. Following its release, the movie received heavy criticism from fans and critics for its lackluster storyline.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s flop Spider-Man universe movie finds Netflix success
The J.C. Chandor directorial was released on Netflix on March 13, 2025, after a disappointing run at the box office following its release.
According to a report by Whats On Netflix, Kraven the Hunter ranked Number 2 in the United States on the list of top 10 movies on the streaming platform. This differs from the ratings the movie received when it was released worldwide.
Before its debut on Netflix, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson movie received negative reviews. The film stands at a dismal score of 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite being heavily promoted, it even failed to wow the fans. In its opening weekend, Kraven the Hunter clocked $11 million, per Deadline. This is lower than other Sony movies, Madame Web and Morbius.
In its total theatrical run, Kraven the Hunter grossed over $60 million worldwide against a massive reported budget of $110 million. As reported earlier by SuperHeroHype, after the movie’s release, Sony has reportedly considered resetting its Spider-Man universe.
The details regarding this reported reset were also shared by an insider with The Wrap, who claimed, “They’ve developed what they want to develop for now. It’s really about the next Spider-Man film.”
Apart from Johnson, Kraven the Hunter features Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, and more. In August 2024, director J.C. Chandor talked about Kraven the Hunter with Deadline and said, “I’m extremely proud of the work we have all done together on Kraven. I think it’s gonna surprise the hell out of a lot of people.”
