Saw XI: Movie’s Writer Shares More Details on Horror Sequel’s Potential Cancellation & Story

More details have emerged regarding the potential cancellation of Saw XI.

On Monday, March 17, 2025, Bloody Disgusting reported that, according to an anonymous source close to the production of Saw XI, the horror sequel has been “100% over” for “almost a year now.” The outlet’s source said that the movie’s producers “started fighting with one another” and couldn’t get past their disagreement, meaning that Saw XI will probably either be delayed or, perhaps even more likely, canceled altogether.

Lionsgate has not yet officially commented on the matter. At the time of this article’s publication, the movie still has a September 26, 2025, release date.

What is the latest Saw XI update?

Patrick Melton, who co-wrote the script for Saw XI alongside Marcus Dunstan, told The Hollywood Reporter that they haven’t heard much about the movie since they submitted their draft in the spring of 2024.

“It’s stalled at a managerial level,” Melton said. “It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s article further notes that it’s unclear at this time whether or not director Kevin Greutert, who directed Saw X, is still attached to helm Saw XI. Greutert was initially announced as the film’s director in February 2024.

“The reason it’s held up is just, there’s inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate,” Melton said. “They just can’t quite get on the same page.”

Melton compared Saw XI’s story to 2009’s Saw VI — also directed by Greutert and co-written by Melton and Dunstan —which was one of the more favorably received Saw sequels by fans and critics.

“Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that,” he explained. “It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you’re a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can’t do anything, and John Kramer’s going to do it.”
