Joe and Anthony Russo, known as the Russo Brothers, are hoping that they “outdo” themselves in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars when compared to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
The Russos directed the 2014 MCU movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Following that, they went on to helm 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
They then took a hiatus from Marvel Studios, as they made Cherry in 2021 and The Gray Man in 2022. Their latest film, The Electric State, arrives on Netflix on March 14, 2025.
It’s been announced that the Russos are returning to Marvel to direct Avengers: Doomsday, which releases in May 2026, and the 2027 sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
What did the Russo Brothers say about Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars
Speaking to GamesRadar+, the Russos said that they’re trying to “beat” the younger versions of themselves and make even better movies with Doomsday and Secret Wars when compared to Infinity War and Endgame.
“Absolutely, we want to beat those younger versions of ourselves,” Joe said. “We have to be, right? Because we have to outdo those movies in a way, or we at least have to take you on an equally engaging journey.”
Anthony added, “These movies are an incredible opportunity for us, and they’re an incredible opportunity for audiences. So we’re doing what we can to deliver the experience everyone, I think, hopes for.”
Official plot details for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars remain under wraps at this time. As announced at San Diego Comic-Con last year, Robert Downey Jr. is playing Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom in the films.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in United States theaters on May 1, 2026, from Marvel Studios. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on May 7, 2027. Spider-Man 4 will be released between those movies on July 31, 2026.
