HBO is officially reuniting with Succession creator Jesse Armstrong for an untitled original movie about billionaires. This project will served as Armstrong’s feature-length directorial debut, after more than a decade since receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on the 2009 black comedy In the Loop.
“We’re ecstatic to be back in business with the singular talent Jesse Armstrong coming off our fruitful collaboration on Succession. Jesse once again raises the bar with a bold examination of modern greed, power and male ambition,” HBO executive Francesca Orsi said in a statement. “That this feature serves as his directorial debut will only elevate what is already thrilling on the page, and we couldn’t be more excited to share this timely film with the world soon.”
Who is the cast in the Succession creator’s HBO movie?
The Succession creator’s HBO movie will be led by Emmy nominees Steve Carell as Randall (The Office, The Patient) and Ramy Youssef (Ramy, Poor Things) as Jeff, along with Jason Schwartzman (Bored to Death) as Hugo Van Yalk and Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night, May December) as Venis. In the film, they will be playing “a group of billionaire friends, who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.”
The untitled HBO original movie will be written and directed by Armstrong. During Succession’s four-season run, the acclaimed scribe had won seven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. In addition, he will also be executive producing alongside Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, Jon Brown, Tony Roche, Will Tracy, Mark Mylod, and Jill Footlick.
“I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on Succession has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so,” Armstrong said. “I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.”
