Patrick Wilson Will Direct Again After Insidious: The Red Door, Gives Update

Golden Globe nominee Patrick Wilson has shared an update about his next directorial project, after previously helming the supernatural horror sequel Insidious: The Red Door in 2023. The fifth installment to Blumhouse’s blockbuster franchise served as a Wilson’s feature-length directorial debut.

Wilson just recently wrapped up production on The Conjuring: Last Rites, which will mark his and Vera Farmiga’s final movie as Ed and Lorraine Warren. The horror sequel will debut in theaters on September 5, 2025. He is currently attached to star in the coming-of-age drama movie Jay Kelly with George Clooney, and in Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg’s upcoming crime thriller series Cape Fear with Amy Adams and Javier Bardem.

Patrick Wilson on his next directorial project

During a recent interview with ComingSoon, Wilson has confirmed that he’s still searching for the right project for his next directorial effort, revealing that he spends most of his free time thinking about it.

“I’m looking at a couple things. I’ve been fortunate to have a few things thrown my way, but haven’t really found the right film yet,” Wilson said. “Then there’s a couple that are certainly outside of that genre that I’m pushing uphill for me to direct and shepherd from just inception, I guess. So that’s exciting to do. So, yeah, I spend most of my day thinking about what I’m gonna direct next [laughs]. It’s a true story.”

Insidious: The Red Door was set a decade after the events of 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, with Dalton heading off to college and coming to grips with his astral projection abilities as well as growing up. The fifth installment also featured the return of franchise vets Rose Byrne as Renai Lambert, Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert, Leigh Whannell as Specs, Angus Sampson as Tucker, and Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier, with Wilson also reprising his role as Josh Lambert. Despite receiving mixed reviews, The Red Door was still able to earn a worldwide gross of $189 million at the box office, making it the high-grossing film of the franchise.
