Star Wars: Kathleen Kennedy Reveals Shawn Levy’s Movie Timeline & More

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy provided key details about the timeline of Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie, in which Ryan Gosling is in talks to star, in a new interview. The conversation encompassed the above-mentioned project, other Star Wars productions, Kennedy’s astounding career as producer and entertainment executive, and the rumors and reports about her alleged departure from Lucasfilm.

Kathleen Kennedy reveals first details for Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie

Kennedy revealed when Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie will take place in the franchise’s timeline in an extensive interview with Deadline. Notably, it was reported last month that Ryan Gosling was being eyed to star in the project.

Kennedy disclosed that the movie would be set in the future after the first nine main Star Wars features, often regarded together as the Skywalker Saga. This includes the original, prequel, and sequel trilogies. She elaborated, “Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.”

She went on to tease that Levy’s movie might feature a blend of new and old characters from the sequel trilogy. “And with this, it’s all pretty much new characters,” Kennedy said, adding, “We may bring some of the characters back from the sequel saga, but pretty much new characters.”

Earlier in the interview, Kennedy indicated that the project would go into production after The Mandalorian’s upcoming big screen conclusion, The Mandalorian & Grogu.

In January 2025, it was reported that Gosling was circling Levy’s Star Wars project. At the time, the movie’s setting was unclear. The Deadpool & Wolverine director has been developing the project since 2022. His frequent collaborator,  Jonathan Tropper, boarded the project as the screenwriter in July 2024.

If Gosling does join the cast, this will not be the first time he headlines an epic sci-fi franchise feature. He previously appeared as Officer K in the Blade Runner sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
