Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung has addressed rumors that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg was behind the decision to cut a kissing scene at the end of the movie.
One of the most polarizing moments of 2024’s Twisters is the lack of a kiss between Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones‘ characters at the end of the movie. The moment, which sees both characters reuniting and likely sparking up a romance at the end of the film, became notorious after fans left the movie hoping for a kiss.
Initial rumors began suggesting that Spielberg — who had consulted with Chung on the film — was behind the decision. However, months later, during a screening of the film in Toronto with a Q&A after, Chung confirmed that wasn’t the case.
What did Lee Isaac Chung say about the Twisters kiss?
When asked about the question, Chung joked that Spielberg actually wanted the kiss, but that after various testings of the film left audiences polarized on the matter, they decided to cut it.
“That was not true,” said Chung. “We shot it. Spielberg wanted the kiss, too. He was like, ‘I hope this works!’ We tested the film, and we were just finding that it was super polarizing. Normally, I want to say don’t be a coward…but this was a tough one. There was a giant team involved, the studios, everybody, and there were quite a lot of people who were doubtful about whether there should be a kiss in this movie. But it was not Spielberg. He’s a romantic like I am.”
Alongside Powell and Edgar-Jones, Twisters also starred Anthony Ramos as Javi, Maura Tierney as Cathy, Brandon Perea as Boone, Daryl McCormack as Jeb, Sasha Lane as Lily, Kiernan Shipka as Addy, Nik Dodani as Praveen, David Corenswet as Scott, Harry Hadden-Paton as Ben, Tunde Adebimpe as Dexter, and Katy O’Brian as Dani.
