Saoirse Ronan & Austin Butler to Star in A24 Movie Deep Cuts

Academy Award nominees Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler have signed on for the leading roles in A24‘s upcoming film adaptation of Deep Cuts, based on Holly Brickley’s recently published coming-of-age romantic novel of the same name. In addition, Ronan has also signed on to server as a producer.

The film will be written and directed by Sean Durkin. This marks the filmmaker’s latest collaboration with A24, following the critical success of 2023’s biographical drama The Iron Claw. The film will also be produced by Josh Safdie, Ronald Bronstein for Central, and Eli Bush.

What is Deep Cuts about?

“Set in the 2000s, Deep Cuts is a love story about two music-obsessed twentysomethings navigating the messy realities of ambition, belonging and adulthood over the course of an era-defining decade,” reads the synopsis.

Ronan was most recently seen in last year’s period drama movie Blitz from acclaimed filmmaker Steve McQueen, and in the drama The Outrun from director Nora Fingscheidt. The latter earned two BAFTA nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Outstanding British Film. She is currently attached to star in the upcoming comedy thriller Bad Apples, with Game of Thrones vet Jacob Anderson.

As for Butler, his most recent role was playing Feyd-Rautha in Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster sequel Dune: Part Two. He also starred in last year’s Apple TV+ miniseries Masters of the Air. At the moment, Butler has several major projects lined-up for him, including: Darren Aronofsky’s crime drama Caught Stealing; Ari Aster’s dark comedy Eddington with Pedro Pascal; the sports drama American Speed with Tom Holland; and Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho remake, where he’ll be playing Patrick Bateman.
