The animation style for Shrek 5 is proving to be divisive among fans.
Shrek 5 will hit United States theaters in December 2026. Universal Pictures recently released a short video for the movie, which announces that Zendaya has joined the cast and will be voicing Shrek’s daughter.
Following the release of the video, a number of fans are upset with the movie’s animation style.
What are people saying about the animation for Shrek 5?
Many Shrek fans are complaining about the look of the animation and are now asking Universal and DreamWorks to improve it before the film is released in theaters. This notably happened before with 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, as Paramount modified the look of the titular hedgehog after the first trailer was released following many fan complaints.

Along with Zendaya, the voice cast of Shrek 5 includes Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona. It is unclear if Antonio Banderas will reprise his role as Puss in Boots in the film.
Shrek 5 will be the first film in the main Shrek series since Shrek Forever After, which was released in 2010. That was preceded by three other movies: 2001’s Shrek, 2004’s Shrek 2, and 2007’s Shrek the Third. There have also been two spin-off films following Banderas’ character: 2011’s Puss in Boots and 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Plot details for Shrek 5 remain under wraps at this time. The film is directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, while Brad Ableson also serves as a co-director. Gina Shay and Illuminatino CEO Chris Meledandri serve as producers.
Shrek 5 will be released in United States theaters on December 23, 2026, from Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation.
