Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, are opening up about filming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars back-to-back.
It was announced in July 2024 that the Russo Brothers would be returning to Marvel Studios to direct two new ensemble superhero movies, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Prior to that, the Russos helmed 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
They went on to direct some projects outside the MCU following Endgame, including 2021’s Cherry and 2022’s The Gray Man, while they have a new Netflix movie, The Electric State, releasing next month.
Speaking with Deadline at the premiere of The Electric State, the Russo’s discussed the upcoming production for both Marvel movies.
What did the Russo Brothers say about filming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars?
“It’s all in London, we’re shooting them fairly back-to-back, it’s a lot of work again, we may or may not survive, we’ll see,” Joe said “But we’re very excited about it. We found a way into the story that we think is gonna be challenging for audiences, it’s challenging for us to execute. And it’s really exciting for us, it gets us out of bed to do it.”
When asked if any X-Men characters will show up in either Doomsday or Secret Wars, Joe said, “Who knows? I don’t know. I don’t know who we’re gonna see. I still don’t know.”
Anthony added, “If you close your eyes and use your imagination, you can see anyone you want. Whoever tickles your fancy.”
Plot details for both Avengers movies remain under wraps at this time, though it is known that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Doctor Doom. Avengers: Doomsday arrives on May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is dated for May 7, 2027.
