The recent encounter between James Gunn and Zack Snyder has seemingly sent fans into a frenzy, with many proposing a potential return for the Man of Steel director to the DCU setup. Despite coming to terms with Snyder’s exit, fans reinvigorated hopes of once again seeing the accredited filmmaker helm a DC project following his recent meet-up with Gunn. Unfortunately for such enthusiasts, the current DC co-CEO has come out to confirm that the duo did not converse about such a proposition at all.
James Gunn says he was ‘just talking to Zack as a friend’
In a recent discussion, the Guardians of the Galaxy director stated that his recent meeting with Zack Snyder was purely a friendly one. As such, the two did not exchange any remarks regarding the possibility of the latter helming a DCU project in the near future.
The said news broke after James Gunn took to Instagram to share a picture with Snyder last Thursday. With fan speculations running rampant, Gunn finally issued a clarification regarding his rendezvous with the Rebel Moon director at a recently conducted DC Studios event.
Addressing their meeting, the veteran filmmaker stated, “I was just talking to Zack as a friend. So, you know, we were just hanging out and then we’re like, ‘Let’s take a picture together.’ We knew full well what we were doing. He thought it was funny. I thought it was funny. And that’s that,” as per ComicBook.com.

James Gunn also revealed that, due to the brief nature of their meet-up, he wasn’t able to find the time to show Zack Snyder an early cut of the upcoming Superman movie. As for the 300 director, he is presently working with Netflix for his next project.
The original architect for DC’s extended cinematic universe, Snyder parted ways with the franchise for good in 2021, following the direct-to-MAX release of his version of the Justice League. Shortly after his departure, Warner Bros. Discovery enlisted Gunn as the co-CEO of DC Studios, promptly handing him the reins of the franchise.
