The Batman’s Robert Pattinson Won’t Be in DCU, James Gunn Comments

James Gunn has given his most definitive comment yet regarding whether or not Robert Pattinson will be the DCU’s Batman.

Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. He’ll soon reprise the role for a sequel that is arriving in 2027. Meanwhile, Gunn and Peter Safran have launched the DCU at Warner Bros. A movie featuring Batman, The Brave and the Bold, is currently in the works from Andy Muschietti.

Last year, Gunn said that he’s “contemplated” making Pattinson the DCU’s Batman; although, he further said “I contemplate everything. I talk about everything.”

He told Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast at the time, “I’m committed to both telling stories in the DCU and telling Elseworlds stories. I want the freedom to tell Elseworlds stories…We want to be able to play with these characters in different ways.”

What did James Gunn say about Robert Pattinson and the DCU?

Per Variety, Gunn has now said it is “very unlikely” that Pattinson will be part of the DCU or will star in The Brave and the Bold.

“But he did not foreclose the possibility that the DCU version of the character could show up before his titular film,” Variety’s article notes.

“I wouldn’t rule anything out,” Gunn said. “He could show up in something else. But the actor doesn’t exist [yet].”

This means that fans will likely have to wait until The Batman Part II comes out in 2027 to see Pattinson return as the Caped Crusader. Gunn’s comment, however, implies that Batman could show up before that in the DCU; potentially in James Watkin’s Clayface movie, which revolves around the titular Batman villain. Batman did have a brief appearance in an episode of Creature Commandos, though he had no dialogue which thus means nobody has been publicly cast in the role at this time.
