September 5 Paramount+ Release Date Set for Thriller Movie’s Streaming Debut

Paramount Pictures has announced the September 5 Paramount+ release date for the upcoming streaming debut of its latest historical drama thriller about the hostage crisis at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. This comes ahead of the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards, where the movie is currently nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

“When we heard that we are nominated, we were overwhelmed with joy. But I think we’re still waiting for that realizing moment because really, it’s not really realized by now,” writer Moritz Binder said in a previous interview with ComingSoon. “Because it’s something that is really hard to realize until I think you are standing there or sitting there. And even then, I don’t know if I can realize it.”

The film was directed Tim Fehlbaum from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alex David and Binder. The cast includes John Magaro, Peter Sarsgaard, Ben Chaplin, Leonie Beneschv, Zinedine Soualem, Georgina Rich, Corey Johnson, Marcus Rutherford, Daniel Adeosun, Benjamin Walker, and Ferdinand Dörfler. It was produced by Fehlbaum, Philipp Trauer, Sean Penn, John Ira Palmer, and John Wildermuth, with Martin Moszkowicz and Christoph Müller executive producing.

When is the September 5 Paramount+ release date?

Following its digital and Blu-ray releases, September 5 will now be available for streaming on Paramount+, starting tomorrow, February 25. Since its theatrical debut, the film has received a Certified Fresh rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Set during the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, it follows an American Sports broadcasting team that quickly adapted from sports reporting to live coverage of the Israeli athletes taken hostage,” reads the synopsis. “Through this lens, September 5 provides a fresh perspective on the live broadcast seen globally by an estimated one billion people at the time. At the heart of the story is Geoff, a young and ambitious producer striving to prove himself to his boss, the legendary TV executive Roone Arledge. Together with German interpreter Marianne and his mentor Marvin Bade, Geoff unexpectedly takes the helm of the live coverage. As narratives shift, time ticks away, and conflicting rumors spread, with the hostages’ lives hanging in the balance, Geoff grapples with tough decisions while confronting his own moral compass.”
