The future of the DCU’s Booster Gold and The Authority projects remains somewhat unclear at this time.
Approximately two years ago, James Gunn announced a number of forthcoming DCU projects. Among those titles were a Booster Gold television series and a movie about The Authority.
While a number of other DCU projects have had plenty of forward momentum since then, with Creature Commandos Season 1 having already been released and Superman arriving this coming summer, there’s been little official news about either Booster Gold or The Authority.
Booster Gold is still in development at this time; however, it lost momentum after DC Studios was waiting on a “particular showrunner/creator.” This unnamed person “expressed interest in the show but ultimately moved on,” according to Variety.
When announcing the project in 2023, Gunn said of Booster Gold, “Booster Gold is one of comics really popular cult heroes. He’s a fascinating guy. He’s a loser from the future who uses future technology to come back to the present day to become a superhero so that people will love him. It is basically the superhero story of imposter syndrome on an HBO Max series.”
What is the recent update on The Authority?
Regarding The Authority, Variety’s article says that the DCU project has “moved to the back burner.”
Safran said, “It’s a very, very big movie, if you’re going to do The Authority properly. And some story elements perhaps that are in Superman and some of the other films that we’ve fast-tracked step a little bit on The Authority.”
Gunn noted the script for The Authority “also had a harder time coming along,” meaning the movie “hasn’t been as much of a priority because it has been subsumed.”
No casting for either Booster Gold or The Authority has been officially announced at this point; however, it is worth noting that María Gabriela de Faría is playing Angela Spica/The Engineer, who is a member of the Authority, in 2025’s Superman, meaning there’s a good chance she’ll reprise her role in the Authority movie.
