Mickey 17 Director Bong Joon Ho Details New Horror Movie

Ahead of Mickey 17‘s theatrical release on March 7, Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho has finally shared some new details about his next action horror movie, which has been developing for nearly 25 years. The untitled project is expected to take place in a subway in Seoul, South Korea.

What is the new Bong Joon Ho horror movie about?

Described as his “life project,” Bong revealed his plans for the untitled horror movie’s opening sequence in a recent interview with MBC Korea. This project would mark the acclaimed filmmaker’s first Korean-language movie following the critical and commercial success of 2019’s Parasite.

“We’re running through the underground section of the subway. In the car next to us, people wearing similar clothes start to come over to our side. We’re running. A lot of people start to come over to our side,” he shared.

Bong gained international recognition for directing critically acclaimed films such as the crime drama Memories of Murder and the 2006 sci-fi horror film The Host. His first English-language film, Snowpiercer, starred Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, and Octavia Spencer. He also directed the 2017 Netflix film Okja. For his work on the black comedy thriller Parasite starring frequent collaborator Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, and Choi Woo-Shik, Bong won three Academy Awards, including Best Director.

His next directorial feature, Mickey 17, is a sci-fi comedy led by Robert Pattinson (The Batman), Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice), Steven Yeun (Beef, Minari), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Endgame, Poor Things), and more. It has been given an R-rating by the MPA for “violent content, language throughout, sexual content, and drug material.”
