The status of Hancock 2 got a surprising update today courtesy of Will Smith, who mentioned some new information regarding a planned sequel.
What is the latest Hancock 2 update?
During a recent surprise appearance on streamer XQC’s stream this week, Smith sat down and discussed a wide variety of topics. Eventually, the subject of Hancock 2 came up, and Smith mentioned that there was a “really cool Hancock 2” idea that’s been brought up to him, before teasing that Zendaya would be approached for a role in the film in some capacity.
““There’s a really cool Hancock 2 idea, we haven’t even talked about it,” said Smith. “I’m going to give you one little piece. Zendaya [is] being approached for a role in Hancock 2.”
Originally released in 2008, Hancock stars Smith in the titular role of John Hancock, an amnesiac, alcoholic, reckless superhero who is trying to uncover mysteries about his past. The film also starred Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman, and explored a different side of the superhero genre. Although critical reactions to the film were mixed, Hancock was still a big hit amongst audiences, and was the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2008, earning more than $629 million at the global box office.
Since its release, talk of a possible sequel has continued to pop up every now and again. In 2009, Columbia Pictures hired Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to write a sequel, but nothing panned out. In 2012, director Peter Berg said he wanted to make a film, and in 2020 Theron said she was also still interested in the project should it ever come up.
