The release date for Steven Spielberg’s next big event film for Univeral Pictures has been delayed.
Spielberg is currently working on a new movie that is rumored to be about UFOs. The movie was originally scheduled to be released in United States theaters on May 15, 2026.
When is the new release date for Steven Spielberg’s next movie?
Per Deadline, Universal has now bumped the movie to June 12, 2026.
The next movie from Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known as the Daniels, was also supposed to be released on June 12, 2026; however, it has now been taken off of Universal Pictures’ release date calendar.
“We hear that development of the Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert directed/written movie is coming along, it just needs more time,” Deadline’s article notes. “A new date will be announced in the near future.”
Spielberg’s next film now shares a release date with the Scary Movie reboot. Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Masters of the Universe movie comes out the week prior, while Pixar’s Toy Story 5 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 19, 2026.
Comparatively, if the movie had kept its May 2026 release date, it would have had to compete with Avengers: Doomsday, which comes out on May 1, and The Mandalorian and Grogu, which arrives on May 22.
Plot details for Spielberg’s movie remain under wraps at this time. The cast includes Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Eve Hewson. The script comes from David Koepp, while Kristie Macosko Krieger serves as a producer for Amblin Entertainment.
This will be Spielberg’s latest film project as a director since 2022’s The Fabelmans, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Michelle Williams), and Best Supporting Actor (Judd Hirsch).
