A sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film has been rumored to be in the works for some time, and according to a new report from The DisInsider, the franchise’s face could be returning for the next entry.
What is the latest rumor about Pirates of the Caribbean 6?
According to its latest report, The DisInsider notes that Johnny Depp, who has played the iconic Jack Sparrow in all five Pirates of the Caribbean films, is preparing to return to the series. The report goes on to mention that Disney is “quietly gearing up” to begin production on a sixth film at some point soon, but that Depp will be making a return to the franchise in it.
The report comes just two months after legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that two different scripts were in the works for the movie, one of which would see Depp return and one that would move the franchise in a different direction.
The DisInsider’s report does mention that they haven’t been able to verify the Depp information with too many sources, however, so they are treating it more like a rumor than anything at this point.
While we don’t know whether or not Depp will return, it remains unlikely that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley — who played William Turner and Elizabeth Swann in the first three films, respectively — will. Late last year, Knightley was open about her desire to no longer work on film franchises after the tough process of making the Pirate films, and Bloom was recently indecisive on a return.
“Listen, it was a wild and fun experience so, you know, never say never. I have a lot of respect for that experience, and Jerry, and the whole thing,” said Bloom last month. “But who knows? I mean, it’s sort of one of those things I really haven’t thought about it, really.”
