Signature Entertainment has acquired the UK and Irish theatrical distribution rights to the long-delayed Red Sonja reboot, based on Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith’s sword and sorcery comic book character. The live-action adaptation has been in development at Millennium Films since 2015, with Bryan Singer and Joey Soloway previously attached to direct the project.
“We’re thrilled to be teaming up with Signature Entertainment to bring Red Sonja to audiences in the UK. This franchise has a passionate global fanbase, and we can’t wait to deliver a film that honors its legacy while introducing the iconic characters to a new generation,” Millennium Media’s J.J. Nugent said in a statement.
When is the Red Sonja reboot release date window?
Signature Entertainment is currently targeting a late 2025 release date window for the Red Sonja reboot, which will be led by Matilda Lutz (Revenge) as the titular barbarian huntress. Joining Lutz are Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Sheroes), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves), Luca Pasqualino (Snowpiercer), Rhona Mitra (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Martyn Ford (Final Score), Ben Radcliffe (Cuban Fury), Eliza Matengu (Predestination), Veronica Ferres (Crisis), Phillip Winchester (Strike Back) and Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead).
“Red Sonja epitomizes the kind of film we’re looking for at Signature – an epic story in a fantasy-laden world with a strong commercial feel to its execution, which made it immediately appealing to us,” Signature Entertainment’s Kayacan Parodi said. “We’re looking forward to introducing UK and Irish audiences to Matilda Lutz’s sword-swinging huntress later this year.”
The film is directed by M.J. Bassett from a screenplay written by Tasha Huo. Producers are Avi Lerner, Mark Canton, Courtney Solomon, Luke Lieberman, Les Weldon, Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, Joe Gatta, MJ Bassett, Jeffrey Greenstein, Jonathan Yunger, and Yariv Lerner. It is executive produced by Trevor Short, Darina Pavlova, Boaz Davidson, Tanner Mobley, Nick Barrucci, Dorothy Canton, Scott Karol, and Heidi Jo Markel.
Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery character that was created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. The character is described as fiery and strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Conan while refusing his advances. Her solo comics are still being published today through Dynamite Entertainment.
