The Odyssey Photo Unveils First Look at Matt Damon’s Character

Universal Pictures has finally released The Odyssey photo for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic drama, based on the classic Greek poem of the same name. It unveils the first look at Matt Damon’s character, as he once again reunites with the acclaimed filmmaker after 2023’s Oppenheimer movie. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026.

Who is Matt Damon’s character in The Odyssey?

The Odyssey photo has confirmed that Damon will be portraying the leading role of Greek hero Odysseus. In the original story, the character is also introduced as the “king of Ithaca, who heads back home after the Trojan War. Presumed dead, Odysseus’ wife Penelope and son Telemachus contend with various suitors who compete for Penelope’s hand in Odysseus’ absence.” The star-studded ensemble cast also includes Robert PattinsonMatt DamonTom HollandAnne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, Will Yun Lee, and more.

Described as a mythic action epic, the film will be written and directed by Nolan, based on Greek poet Homer’s classic story of the same name. This project marks the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s latest collaboration Universal Pictures following the commercial and critical success of Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer biopic. The film will be produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas. Production is expected to begin sometime in late February.
