In a shocking turn of events, Doctor Strange star Tilda Swinton has confirmed that she will take a break from movies to figure out how she wants to spend the next phase of her life. Ever since she made her screen debut in 1986 with Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio, the actress has starred in a bucketload of iconic movies, including 2005’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Michael Clayton, and more. However, Swinton’s prolonged stint in front of the camera seems to have taken its toll on her as the British thespian has announced that she will be taking a hiatus from making films.
Why Tilda Swinton is taking a break from movies
During the Constantine star’s recent appearance at the Berlin International Film Festival, she was honored with the event’s Golden Bear for lifetime achievement. At the event, Tilda Swinton shared that she will not shoot any film this year.
While answering a question regarding the unaccomplished goals in her acting career, the actress revealed that she plans to take a break from Hollywood. She stated, “I can tell you that when I go home on Monday to Scotland, I’m entering something that I’ve been looking forward to for about 15 years — which is a period of my life when I do something different.” The actress then added, “I can’t quite say what it is, but I can say I’m not shooting a film for the rest of this year. I want more time,” as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Swinton then explained the rationale behind her decision to take a break. She remarked that the kind of artistic projects that entice her have added boundations to achieve financial greatness now. This, in turn, ends up restricting filmmakers from truly exercising their creative liberty. Labelling the process as “strenuous,” the Academy Award winner continued, “And I need a break. So I’m going to have one. I’m going to have some peace and quiet to think and figure out what the next 40 years are.”
Nevertheless, Tilda Swinton assured fans that the said break does not translate into retirement. “I want time to develop projects,” she explained. “Some are for the cinema, some are not — but I need time.”
