Chris Evans is denying the reports claiming that he’ll appear in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday.
Evans has played Captain America/Steve Rogers in a number of MCU projects. His final outing as the character was seemingly in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame; although, Evans then did reprise his role as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
In December 2024, Deadline reported that Evans would be returning to Marvel for Avengers: Doomsday. The report didn’t clarify whether he would reprise his role as Steve Rogers or play an entirely new character, though Anthony Mackie’s Captain America/Sam Wilson is expected to be featured in the ensemble picture.
Is Chris Evans going to appear in Marvel’s next Avengers movie?
Speaking with Esquire, however, Evans said that the reports of his MCU return are untrue.
“This always happens,” Evans said. “I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it.”
He further noted that he is “happily retired” from Marvel at this time, which is a sentiment he has also previously shared with Mackie.
Avengers: Doomsday and the 2027 sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, are both being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers. Official plot details remain under wraps at this time, though there’s been no shortage of online rumors suggesting which characters may show up.
The main cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, along with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, will all definitely be appearing in Doomsday, while Benedict Cumberbatch recently said Doctor Strange won’t be in the next Avengers movie but will have a sizable role in Secret Wars.
Since Avengers: Endgame, Evans has starred in movies such as 2019’s Knives Out, 2022’s The Gray Man, 2023’s Ghosted, 2023’s Pain Hustlers, and, most recently, 2024’s Red One. He’ll soon be seen in Ethan Coen’s Honey Don’t! movie, which will be released in the United States this coming May.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars follows on May 7, 2027.
