The Insidious movies are one of the most successful horror franchises of recent years. The latest entry, Insidious: The Red Door, came out in 2023 and was a commercial success. However, Sony Pictures has decided to postpone the release date of the next chapter in the story, Insidious 6, by nearly a year. In its place, the studio will release Darren Aronofsky‘s crime thriller Caught Stealing, featuring Austin Butler.
Austin Butler-led Caught Stealing to take Insidious 6’s original release date
Sony Pictures announced on Wednesday, January 29, that the new release date of Insidious 6 is August 21, 2026. Caught Stealing will premiere on the horror feature’s original premiere date, August 29, 2025.
James Wan helmed the first Insidious movie, which debuted in 2010 and performed well both with the critics and at the box office. Wan returned to direct the sequel, Insidious: Chapter 2, which premiered in 2013. While it received mostly negative reviews from the critics, it continued the successful commercial streak of the franchise. Insidious: Chapter 3, released in 2015 and directed by Leigh Whannell, drew mixed critical responses but was a commercial success. Adam Robitel directed the fourth entry, Insidious: The Last Key. Released in 2018, the movie upheld the box-office streak, though it received poorer ratings than the third movie. Patrick Wilson, who has played Josh Lambert in multiple entries in the franchise, helmed the latest chapter.
In December 2024, we reported, citing Jeff Sneider, that the release date of Insidious 6 had been pushed back, though the movie was still in development. At the time of writing this article, it remains unclear who is directing the movie and who is part of its cast.
Meanwhile, Caught Stealing is an adaptation of Charlie Huston’s Hank Thompson series. Huston penned the script for the feature. Butler will portray Thompson, an ex-baseball player whose glory days are behind him. Set in the ’90s, the plot follows Thompson as he is unwittingly dragged into the criminal underbelly of downtown New York. Some of the other members of the cast are Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Bad Bunny.
