Creature Commandos’ James Gunn on The Suicide Squad’s Place in DCU Canon

James Gunn has offered an explanation as to how Peacemaker Season 1 and The Suicide Squad fit into the DCU’s canon following the release of Creature Commandos.

Creature Commandos is the first official project that is part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. It will be followed by Gunn’s Superman, which releases in United States theaters this coming July, before Peacemaker Season 2 premieres in August.

With Creature Commandos having addressed some of the events that happened in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, which was part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) continuity, Gunn has an explanation as to how that film and the first season of Peacemaker fit into the DCU.

What did James Gunn say about the DCU canon?

Gunn said on Bluesky, “Short answer: Only Creature Commandos forward is pure canon. For instance, Rick Flag Jr was killed because we heard Rick Flag Sr talking about it in Creature Commandos, not because we saw it in The Suicide Squad.

“Long answer: Only CC forward is pure canon; Peacemaker is almost entirely consistent with that canon other than the Justice League; The Suicide Squad has a lot of consistencies but I think of it as an imperfect memory.”

Creature Commandos premiered on Max in December 2024. The voice cast of the adult animated series includes Indira Varma as the Bride, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Will Magnus, and Clayface, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Anya Chalotra as Circe, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

All seven episodes of Creature Commandos are now streaming on Max, while a second season is in the works. Peacemaker Season 1 and The Suicide Squad are also currently available to stream on Max.

Superman flies into theaters on July 11, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures.
