Alongside Chan and Li, The Forbidden Kingdom also starred Liu Yifei, Li Bingbing, Michael Angrano, Morgan Benoit, Collin Chou, and Wang Deshun.

Originally released in 2008, The Forbidden Kingdom is a fantasy wuxia film loosely based on the legendary 16th-century novel Journey to the West, and follows the story of an American teenage (Angarano), who is transported back to ancient China, and must accompany Lu Yan (Chan) and Sun Wukong (Li) on a quest to return the staff of the Monkey King to its rightful owner.

The film is often regarded as one of the first coproductions that saw an American director making an English-language wuxia film, and is often the first film to star both Jackie Chan and Jet Li. The movie was a moderate success, making $128 million at the global box office at the time of its release.
