Mission: Impossible 8 Action Scene Almost Gave Viewer a Heart Attack, Says Director

The Mission: Impossible franchise is known for its jaw-dropping action scenes. Mission: Impossible 8 director Christopher McQuarrie revealed that one action sequence was so tense and gripping that it induced heart complications for one audience member.

“We had a small screening, and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack,'” McQuarrie told Empire Magazine. “And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.'”

McQuarrie teased this scene by calling it “the most difficult thing” the franchise has ever done. Remember that Mission: Impossible 6 featured the sunset halo jump, while Mission: Impossible 7 had a motorcycle jump off a cliff. If Mission: Impossible 8’s sequence is crazier than those two, then it must be out of this world.

Who is involved in Mission: Impossible 8?

Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 8, which now carries the title Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The film is the direct sequel to Mission: Impossible 7. Ethan now has the cruciform key that controls the Entity, a powerful AI. In Mission: Impossible 8, Ethan and his team must find and destroy the Entity, which is located on a sunken Russian submarine known as the Sevastopol.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s cast features Hayley Atwell as Grace, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Esai Morales as Gabriel, Pom Klementieff as Paris, Angela Bassett as Erika Sloane, and Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge.

Shea Whigham, Mariela Garriga, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, and Frederick Schmidt also star.

McQuarrie directs Mission: Impossible 8 from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. The Final Reckoning marks McQuarrie’s fourth-directed Mission movie behind Dead Reckoning, Fallout, and Rogue Nation. McQuarrie and Cruise are the producers for the eighth entry.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning opens in theaters on May 23, 2025.
