Disney’s Moana 2 has surpassed $1 billion in global box office revenue, making it the third Disney release in 2024 to achieve this milestone (via Deadline).
The animated sequel, directed by David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, premiered on November 27, 2024, and features Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively. The film earned $442.8 million domestically and $567.1 million internationally, totaling $1.01 billion.
Originally developed as a streaming-exclusive series for Disney+, Moana 2 was later restructured as a theatrical release. It debuted with a record-breaking $225 million opening weekend, surpassing Frozen II’s $125 million Thanksgiving weekend record. The film is now the 32nd Disney production to cross $1 billion globally. It is the fourth Walt Disney Animation Studios title to achieve this milestone, joining Frozen, Frozen II, and Zootopia.
Globally, Moana 2 is the second-highest-grossing animated release of all time in Brazil and France. It has set records as the highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios release in several regions, including France, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico, among many more. Top-performing international markets include France ($61.2 million), the UK ($50.5 million), and Germany ($43.1 million).
The success of Moana 2 contributed to Disney becoming the only studio in 2024 to surpass $5 billion in total worldwide box office revenue. This marks the first time a studio has crossed this benchmark since 2019. The movie’s global appeal and box office success solidify its place among the top animated films of all time.
