The titles included in the Criterion April 2025 lineup have been announced, including Sean Baker’s Anora. The comedy-drama, which starred Mikey Madison as the titular sex worker, received favorable box office numbers despite the limited theatrical run last year.
The Anora 4K UHD + Blu-ray special edition will be entering the Criterion collection on April 29, 2025. The special features include audio commentaries with the cast and crew, a new making-of documentary, interviews with the director and Madison, some deleted scenes, and more.
The film revolves around Anora, an erotic dancer and sex worker from Brooklyn who suddenly gets a one-in-a-lifetime chance at a fairytale story when she meets and eventually marries a young Russian client named Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn). But when Ivan’s oligarch family from Russia finds out about their marriage, they stop at nothing to get it annulled, threatening Anora’s Cinderella story.
Criterion described Anora as “a whirlwind neorealist screwball comedy with an aching heart.” The feature has earned several nominations from various award-giving bodies, including Gotham Awards, Film Independent Spirit Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and Golden Globe. The director also bagged the Palme d’Or award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
Anora also stars Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Aleksei Serebryakov, Darya Ekamasova, Lindsey Normington, and more.
