Everyone must respect the balance as Mubi’s biggest film ever returns to theaters. The theatrical rerelease date for The Substance at over 350 theaters nationwide this January has been announced.
The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, was named one of 2024’s greatest new movies. While the body horror received divisive reactions, it debuted to widespread praise and even won the best screenplay award at Cannes. The feature also gave Moore (who starred as the fading celebrity Elisabeth Sparkle) her first major acting award at the Golden Globes.
The Substance stars Dennis Quaid as Harvey, Edward Hamilton Clark as Fred, Gore Abrams as Oliver, and more. It is written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat.
When is The Substance’s theatrical rerelease date?
The Substance debuted in theaters on September 19, 2024, and was made available for streaming on October 31. Now, one of the most talked-about horror titles of the 21st century is coming back to US theaters starting January 17, according to IndieWire.
Moore stars in The Substance as a renowned celebrity who watches her prime fade before her eyes as she reaches her 50th birthday. Amid the distress of losing her long-running aerobics show, she decides to take a mysterious drug that promises to create a better, younger, and enhanced version of herself — leading to the birth of Sue (played by Qualley). Both of them cannot be conscious at the same time, and the rule must not be broken no matter what. However, as Sue immediately reaches the peak of her stardom, conflicts emerge.
Apart from its impressive box office run, The Substance also proved to be a gem among critics. It currently boasts an 89% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sims giving the feature a perfect 10 score.
The Substance returns to US theaters on January 17.
