John Malkovich Is a Cult Leader in First Look Photo of A24’s Opus

The first look photo for A24’s Opus has been unveiled, showing award-winning actor John Malkovich as a pop star cult leader. The upcoming horror movie is written and directed by Mark Anthony Green and is set to hit theaters on March 14, 2025.

What is Opus about?

Opus revolves around an ambitious young writer, Ariel Ecton (played by The Bear’s Ayo Ede biri), in search of a perfect story. She gets invited to the remote compound of Alfred Moretti (played by Malkovich), an iconic pop star who disappeared from the public eye for three decades. She then finds herself in the middle of a sinister plan behind Alfred’s highly anticipated return while surrounded by journalists and the legendary pop star’s cult of followers.

“A young writer is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan,” the synopsis reads.

Opus marks A24’s first horror feature for 2025. In addition to Malkovich and Edebiri, Opus also stars Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets), Amber Midthunder (Prey), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus), Young Mazino (Beef), Stephanie Suganami (Power Book II: Ghost), Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon), and more. 

Malkovich is known for his roles in Death Of A Salesman, Dangerous Liaisons, The Glass Menagerie, Of Mice And Men, In The Line Of Fire, Con Air, Empire Of The Sun, Ripley’s Game, Bird Box, and Being John Malkovich. 

Meanwhile, Edebiri’s notable acting credits include The Sweet East, Bottoms, Theater Camp, How It Ends, As of Yet, and Cicada, among others. She also lent her voice to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and Inside Out 2. 

Opus hits theaters on March 14.
